Nocturnal Reflux: Assessing and Addressing the Problem

چکیده
30 INTRODUCTION Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is defined as the occurrence of chronic symptoms or mucosal damage produced by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. The most common symptom is heartburn, experienced by 10% of the United States population daily and by 40% at least once monthly (1). In addition, it is estimated that more than 40 million people use over-the-counter antacids and histamine2-receptor antagonists (H2-RAs) at least twice weekly, making GERD a highly prevalent condition. Esophageal reflux usually follows one of two patterns: upright or supine (2). Patients who Nocturnal Reflux: Assessing and Addressing the Problem GERD IN THE 21st CENTURY, SERIES #16

Pulmonary Scintiscan Findings in Sulfur Mustard Injured Patients Suspected for Gastroesophageal Reflux; a Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study
Background:Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) prevalence in patients with sulfur mustard (SM)-induced bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) is higher than exposed cases with mild lung injuries. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence of microaspirations using nuclear scintiscan among BO patients with SM exposure. Methods: This was a prospective cross-sectional study conducted on patient...
متن کاملNocturnal Gastroesophageal Reflux Revisited by Impedance-pH Monitoring
BACKGROUND/AIMS Impedance-pH monitoring allows detailed characterization of gastroesophageal reflux and esophageal activity associated with reflux. We assessed the characteristics of nocturnal reflux and esophageal activity preceding and following reflux. METHODS Impedance-pH tracings from 11 healthy subjects and 76 patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease off acid-suppressive therapy we...

Gastro-oesophageal (GO) reflux is believed to be a possible cause of nocturnal asthma. The aim of this study was to see if there is any correlation between the incidence of GO-reflux at night and nocturnal asthma. Thirty-seven adult patients with a history of nocturnal asthma for more than one hundred days a year and of reflux disease were evaluated using 24 h pH-monitoring of the oesophagus an...

AIM To investigate the incidence of nocturnal dyspeptic symptoms in patients with functional dyspepsia (FD) and whether prokinetic drugs can alleviate them. METHODS Eighty-five consecutive Chinese patients with FD were included in this study. One week after single-blinded placebo run-in treatment, baseline nocturnal intragastric pH, bile reflux and nocturnal dyspeptic symptoms of eligible pat...

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic disorder and the most common disease that affects the esophagus. A population-based study estimated that 20% of the U.S. adult population experiences GERDrelated symptoms at least once a week [1]. GERD can lead to esophageal mucosal injury in a subset of patients as well as bothersome symptoms, such as heartburn and acid regurgitation, which m...
